Last year the boyfriend and I moved into our very own house. It was a big step. A huge step. The house was a bit of a fixer upper, but we loved it. We saw the potential in it and we made a plan to work on it. Some rooms have been renovated, others are kept the way they are until we have fixed some other rooms. We won’t start renovating the bedroom for example until the attic is finished, because then we can temporarily move all the bedroom furniture into the attic.
The bedroom used to be the bedroom of the teenage son from the previous owners and he decided to paint all the walls black. Yes. Black. I’m not a big fan of it and neither is the boyfriend, but as I said before: there’s a plan and we’re sticking to it. After a year of waking up in this pitch black room, I decided I had enough. I got to know Posca markers, which are pens filled with paint, so you can basically draw with them on all kinds of surfaces like wood and plastic… and walls. And since I’m into surface pattern design, I wondered myself: “Why not?”. Of course I asked the boyfriend as well before starting to doodle on the walls and he gave his permission to go ahead! He dislikes those black walls as much as I do.
So one afternoon I went ahead and in a couple of hours I had a nice mural. It doesn’t fill the entire wall yet. I do want it to reach the ceiling, but so far I like it a lot. When the boyfriend asked me what the shapes were, I didn’t just want to say “abstract flowers” so I started telling him that each and every circle is a dream. That explanation makes total sense… to me at least. I didn’t expect the boyfriend to understand but he responded: “Oh, just like in the BFG by Roald Dahl” and he nodded approvingly. And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is exactly why he’s my boyfriend.
